RICHARDS BAY, (CAJ News) – IN a dramatic Betway Premiership round on Tuesday, Richards Bay FC secured a significant victory over Kaizer Chiefs, while several other teams continued their push in the tight South African top‑flight title and mid‑table battles.
At the uMhlathuze Sports Complex, Richards Bay edged Kaizer Chiefs 1‑0 thanks to a second‑half winner from Thulani Gumede.
The result ended Richards Bay’s winless start to 2026 and lifted the KwaZulu‑Natal side into ninth place on the Betway Premiership table with 23 points from 19 matches, offering a morale boost in the middle of the standings.
Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, suffered their fourth defeat in five games in all competitions, undermining their hopes of climbing into continental competition positions.
Chiefs remain around mid‑table with 30 points, struggling for consistency after recent losses.
The loss at Richards Bay compounds Chiefs’ woes following a recent 3‑0 defeat to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby at the weekend, a result that saw the Glamour Boys slip further behind the title challengers.
Elsewhere, although full results from Tuesday’s other fixtures were pending, earlier action in the weekend provided further context to the title race.
Mamelodi Sundowns beat Sekhukhune United 3‑1 over weekend, keeping pace with leaders Orlando Pirates and maintaining pressure at the top of the table.
Sundowns’ win underscored their intent to challenge for the championship in what remains a tight battle for supremacy in the 2025/26 season.
Tuesday evening’s matches in the lower reaches of the table were equally important.
Teams like TS Galaxy and Orbit College FC prepare to fight for valuable points that could determine their safety from relegation battles later in the season, with Galaxy sitting on 24 points and Orbit on 15 ahead of midweek fixtures.
The latest results have tightened the title race at the top.
Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are sharing the lead with 41 points each, making every point vital as the season progresses.
Any slip from either side could open the door for Sekhukhune United or Durban City to capitalise on a rare opportunity to challenge for the crown.
Kaizer Chiefs’ struggles have hampered their chances of climbing into the top eight — crucial for qualification to continental competitions next season.
Meanwhile, Richards Bay’s win boosts their confidence and standings but leaves them firmly in the middle of the table, with safety still the immediate priority.
Teams lower down will need strong midweek performances to avoid slipping closer to the relegation zone.
As the Betway Premiership season continues, every match remains pivotal — whether for title aspirations, continental qualification, or survival hopes — making for a compelling second half of the campaign.
