ABUJA, (CAJ News) – SEARCH-and-rescue operations are ongoing in northern Nigeria as the death toll from floods exceeds 200.

The inclement weather has hit Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, the largest state by size, in recent days.

Hundreds of people have been displaced and an unspecified number missing.

Relevant federal agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)  have been mobilised to support the state government’s efforts.

Relief materials and temporary shelter assistance are being deployed.

“We will ensure that no Nigerian affected by this disaster is left behind or unheard of,” assured Nigerian president, Bola Tinubu.

“I call on all Nigerians to keep our fellow citizens in Mokwa in our thoughts and prayers. In times of adversity, we draw strength from our unity, resilience and shared humanity.”

Tinubu directed security agencies to assist in the emergency efforts while NEMA and the National Emergency Response Centre has been tasked with coordination and providing updates as necessary.

More rainfall is forecast over central and southern Nigeria, with the latter projected to be more affected.

The West African country is prone to floods, with the worst leaving around 600 people dead, in 2022.

Over 1,4 million were displaced.

Northern Nigeria also faces violent crime by kidnapping gangs and terror groups.
