JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – AS the festive season looms and household costs soar, Laager Rooibos is showing South Africans how one humble local ingredient can save money, reduce waste, and promote sustainable living.
For generations, Rooibos has been a beloved South African staple — a caffeine-free tea rich in antioxidants and famed for its health benefits. But beyond the teacup, Rooibos is proving to be a versatile, eco-friendly alternative to many costly products.
“Rooibos has long been celebrated for its health benefits, but this incredible herb has uses that extend beyond the teacup,” says Candice Sessions, Marketing Manager for Laager Rooibos.
“With a few simple tricks, Rooibos can replace several store-bought items, save families money while help the planet.”
Among the most surprising uses: Rooibos tea leaves can enrich soil and retain moisture in gardens; brewed tea makes a soothing, antioxidant-rich bath soak; and cooled Rooibos can calm sunburned skin or even soothe pets’ itchy coats.
It can also be turned into homemade iced tea, facial scrubs, or natural cleaning aids — all affordable, waste-free alternatives to shop-bought products.
Rooibos is also inspiring creativity. Through the UP-Cycled project with the University of Pretoria, Laager ambassadors Lebo and Tebo Ndala mentor students in reusing Rooibos tea bags to create recipes, crafts, and sustainable innovations.
“Laager Rooibos proves sustainability starts at home,” says Lebo. “From #LandfillToRunway, we’re showing that waste can spark opportunity.”
Laager Rooibos remains the only Rooibos tea endorsed by the Heart & Stroke Foundation SA, available in major retailers and online,
