JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – CHINESE electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD will host its Mega Electric Day this Saturday, 8 November, at dealerships nationwide, giving South African consumers a first glimpse of its latest plug-in hybrid SUV, the Sealion 5.
The Sealion 5, joining BYD’s popular Ocean range alongside the Dolphin and Seal, is designed for urban families, combining long-range hybrid capability with modern conveniences such as a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, intelligent voice control, and a large infotainment display.
Full specifications and pricing will be revealed later this month, ahead of the vehicle’s official local launch.
Visitors to the event can enjoy test drives, entertainment, family-friendly activities, and exclusive offers, including discounts of up to R30,000 on selected models.
Five lucky test drivers will also win experiences valued at over R20,000 each.
BYD first entered the South African market in 2022, initially with the Dolphin and Seal EVs, aiming to introduce affordable, high-performance electric mobility to the country.
Since then, the company has steadily expanded its presence, establishing a reputation for cutting-edge technology, long-range performance, and sustainable innovation.
“Mega Electric Day is an opportunity for South Africans to experience BYD’s world-leading EV technology firsthand,” said a company spokesperson.
“The Sealion 5 reflects our commitment to making advanced, family-friendly vehicles accessible, functional, and exciting.”
With BYD accelerating its local rollout, the Mega Electric Day signals a growing push toward sustainable mobility and a broader choice of electric and hybrid vehicles for South African drivers.
