GABORONE, (CAJ News) – BOTSWANA has paid a historic tribute to its athletics sensation Letsile Tebogo, unveiling a new P50 banknote featuring the image of the 200m Olympic gold medallist.
President Duma Gideon Boko’s office announced the development on Friday (today), describing the gesture as both a celebration of Tebogo’s global sporting achievements and a commemoration of Botswana’s Golden Jubilee.
“The Bank of Botswana unveils a new P50 note featuring Olympic medallist Letsile Tebogo, celebrating both its Golden Jubilee and a national icon,” the Presidency said in a statement.
The honour has drawn widespread praise across the 16-member Southern African Development Community (SADC), with citizens welcoming Botswana’s decision to recognise a sports star rather than a political figure.
South African national Tsakani Manyise applauded the move: “Some countries always bestow such honours on corrupt politicians hiding behind liberation credentials. Botswana has set an example by honouring a civilian who made the nation proud.”
From Zimbabwe, Peaceful Ngara added: “Congrats to Botswana. This looks stunning and truly amazing! To see our very own black people celebrated like this — kudos!”
Others echoed the sentiment on social media. User Lid2000 noted: “For once, it’s not a politician. This is commendable.”
Meanwhile, Otto Von Bismark II described it as a “true reflection of democracy when national icons are celebrated.”
Tebogo etched his name into history at the Paris 2024 Olympics, becoming the first African athlete to win gold in the men’s 200 metres.
The victory was hailed as a watershed moment for African sprinting, which has traditionally lagged behind global powerhouses like the United States and Jamaica in short-distance track events.
In addition to his Olympic triumph, Tebogo previously held the world Under-20 record in the 100 metres, underlining his pedigree as one of the fastest rising stars in global athletics.
His versatility has also seen him compete in the 400m, 300m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay, cementing his reputation as a multi-event sprinter with rare talent.
Analysts say Botswana’s decision to feature Tebogo on its currency is more than symbolic.
It represents a broader effort to inspire national pride, especially among the youth, and to project Botswana’s identity globally through sport.
By placing an athlete on its banknote, Botswana joins a growing list of countries that use currency design to celebrate cultural and sporting achievements rather than purely political or historical milestones.
