LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – THE Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) reports net losses of over K645,457 (US$23 934) this past weekend because of vandalism and theft targeting critical infrastructure.

Multiple incidents disrupted electricity supply in various places across the Southern African country and consequently affected businesses and provision of social services.

The provinces of Lusaka (the capital), Copperbelt, Luapua, Northwest and Southern were hardest hit.

Losses to ZESCO included stolen cables, transformers and damage to critical infrastructure.

The impact of vandalism and theft on communities included prolonged outages in residential areas, disrupting daily life and safety.

Hospitals and clinics relying on backup generators faced increased operational strain.

Schools, markets and recreational centres were left without power.

ZESCO reiterated an offer to reward individuals with credible information against vandalism.

It is assured of strict confidentiality.

“Your vigilance helps us to provide safe and reliable electricity for all. Together, we can combat vandalism and protect our nation’s electrical installations,” the power utility stated.
