LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – ZAMBIAN police have shut down an alleged illegal online platform said to be run by a Chinese national.
The suspect, identified as Paheerding Aimaiti (aged 32), has been arrested on charges of using the so-called JIXW computer system to commit offences and for obtaining money by false pretences.
Police reported late Wednesday that between January 10 and April 15, JIXW, which was heavily promoted on social media by some celebrities, claimed to be a bracelet-manufacturing company.
“However, it was allegedly involved in unauthorised online trading and investment activities in Zambia,” said Godfrey Chilabi, Assistant Public Relations Officer at the Zambia Police Service.
He stated that the platform collected money from the unsuspecting members of the public through a mobile app linked to a specific phone number and allegedly transferred the money out of the country using crypto currency, raising concerns about financial fraud and cybercrime.
The police spokesman said investigations indicate that the platform may have defrauded individuals of at least K184 000 (US$6 485).
So far, 36 people have formally lodged complaints with the police.
The suspect has been charged with prohibition of use of computer or computer system for offences, contrary to the Cyber Crimes Act, updated recently, and the Penal Code.
He has been released on police bond and is scheduled to appear in court soon.
Chilabi said investigations might lead to additional arrests.
“The Zambia Police Service is appealing to any other individuals who may have been swindled through this platform to come forward and report to the nearest police station,” Chilabi said.
