TRIPOLI, (CAJ News) – A MAJORITY of the over 400 individuals rescued from boats in distress in the international waters in recent days are African.

Those rescued by Emergency’s search and rescue ship, Life Support, are from Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Eritrea, Ghana, Mali and Somalia, countries that are devastated by armed conflicts, political instability, poverty and the climate crisis.

Of the above, only Bangladesh is not in Africa, where people mostly use the Mediterranean, through Libya to enter Europe by sea.

The individuals, rescued in three separate operations, have since disembarked in the port of Naples.

The highest number of survivors was 215, rescued on DSaturday.

“The disembarkation operations went smoothly, thanks to the cooperation of the authorities and the volunteers who assisted us,” commented Domenico Pugliese, captain of Life Support.

“Now that all the rescued people are finally safe on land, we can only wish them the best.”

With this landing, Life Support reports it has completed its 30th mission in the central Mediterranean.

Operational since December 2022, the ship has rescued a total of 2 701 people.
