DURBAN, (CAJ News) – THE Betway Premiership title race intensified following a crucial weekend of fixtures played on Saturday and Sunday with Mamelodi Sundowns strengthening their position at the summit while Orlando Pirates kept their fading hopes alive.

Sundowns delivered another commanding performance after defeating Siwelele at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

The victory further underlined why the Pretoria giants remain favourites to secure yet another league crown.

Their consistency, squad depth and experience in handling pressure continue to separate them from the chasing pack.

Orlando Pirates also collected valuable points after overcoming Magesi FC away from home.

The Buccaneers remain among the strongest contenders due to their organised defence and attacking quality, although they still face a difficult task in catching Sundowns at the top of the standings.

Elsewhere, Kaizer Chiefs boosted their hopes of finishing as third best after securing a convincing victory 2-0 over Sekhukhune United on Sunday.

TS Galaxy and Chippa United battled for important points in a tightly contested encounter, while AmaZulu and Orbit College shared the spoils in another significant clash affecting the middle section of the table.

Marumo Gallants and Richards Bay also fought for survival points as the relegation battle continues to intensify.

At the bottom of the table, teams such as Richards Bay, Siwelele and Chippa United remain under pressure as they attempt to avoid relegation.

Poor defensive records and inconsistency throughout the season have left them vulnerable heading into the closing stages of the campaign.

Meanwhile, clubs including Sekhukhune United, AmaZulu, Polokwane City and TS Galaxy are involved in a fierce contest for top-eight positions, which guarantee qualification for next season’s MTN8 competition.

Sundowns continue to look like the strongest title contenders largely because of their tactical discipline, winning mentality and ability to rotate quality players without weakening the team.

Pirates remain dangerous challengers due to their attacking flair and strong support base, but dropped points earlier in the season may ultimately prove costly.

With only a handful of matches remaining before the end of the campaign, every point has become increasingly significant both in the championship race and the battle to avoid relegation.

South African football supporters can therefore expect a dramatic finish to another thrilling Betway Premiership season.
