DURBAN, (CAJ News) – THE Betway Premiership produced another compelling round of football during the weekend of 7–8 March 2026, with crucial results continuing to shape both the title race and the battle for survival in South Africa’s topflight.

The weekend’s league action followed a busy midweek programme that saw several key encounters influence the standings.

One of the standout results was Orlando Pirates’ hard-fought 2–1 victory over Polokwane City, a result that strengthened the Buccaneers’ grip at the summit of the table. Patrick Maswanganyi’s influence proved decisive as Pirates showed resilience to secure maximum points away from home.

Another significant match saw Mamelodi Sundowns edge Golden Arrows 2–1 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Despite being reduced to ten men, the defending champions held firm to claim an important win that kept them firmly in contention for the title.

Elsewhere, Marumo Gallants boosted their survival hopes with an impressive 3–1 victory over Chippa United earlier in the week, while Richards Bay inflicted further misery on Kaizer Chiefs with a narrow 1–0 victory.

Although the weekend of 7–8 March also featured Nedbank Cup matches, these fixtures still had implications for the morale and momentum of several Premiership sides.

TS Galaxy defeated Jacksa Spears 2–0 to advance to the semi-finals, while Durban City overcame Golden Arrows on penalties after a 1–1 draw.

At this stage of the season, Orlando Pirates appear to be the strongest contenders for the league crown. Their consistent run of victories has allowed them to consolidate the top position, while Mamelodi Sundowns remain their closest challengers.

The Pretoria giants have the experience and squad depth to mount a late surge, suggesting the title race may ultimately be decided between these two heavyweights.

The competition for a top-eight finish remains intense. Teams such as Stellenbosch FC, AmaZulu, TS Galaxy and Polokwane City are all vying for positions that secure qualification for the MTN8 next season.

However, Kaizer Chiefs are in danger of missing out on the top half of the table after a poor run of form that has seen them suffer several defeats in recent weeks.

At the opposite end of the standings, the struggle to avoid relegation is equally dramatic. Marumo Gallants’ recent victory has revived their survival hopes, while clubs such as Magesi FC, Chippa United and Orbit College remain under pressure near the bottom of the table.

With several matches still to be played, the Betway Premiership season remains finely balanced.

The coming weeks will determine whether Orlando Pirates can maintain their lead, whether Sundowns can launch a decisive comeback, and which teams will ultimately secure their top-flight status for another season.
