JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – IN a thrilling encounter at the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2026, Zimbabwe national cricket team secured a stunning six-wicket victory over hosts Sri Lanka on Thursday to cap an unbeaten Group B campaign and advance to the Super 8 stage with confidence.

Zimbabwe chased down a target of 179 with three balls to spare, finishing on 182/4, while Sri Lanka posted 178/7 earlier at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Zimbabwe won by six wickets.

Top performances from key Chevrons players inspired the victory.

Opener Brian Bennett anchored the run chase with a measured 63 not out, while skipper Sikandar Raza struck a calculated 45 off 26 balls, earning Player of the Match honours.

Their collective efforts ensured Zimbabwe remained unbeaten in all their group matches, a remarkable achievement highlighted by consistent batting and incisive bowling that kept Sri Lanka’s target within reach.

Sri Lanka’s innings featured a solid start from veteran batter Pathum Nissanka, who scored a fluent 62, but Zimbabwe’s disciplined bowling — including contributions from experienced players Graeme Cremer and Blessing Muzarabani — kept the hosts from posting a match-winning total.

Raza praised the team’s unity and belief after the match, stressing that Zimbabwe’s resilience had fuelled their success.

“We’ve shown that with good cricket and belief, the toss doesn’t matter — it’s how we respond that counts,” he said, acknowledging Bennett and the rest of the squad for executing the game plan under pressure.

Zimbabwe’s head coach expressed pride in the squad’s growth and consistency throughout the tournament, calling the unbeaten run “a defining moment for Zimbabwean cricket” and a platform to compete strongly in the Super 8s.

On social media, fans erupted with jubilation with law lecturer Fadzayi Mahere boasting: “They (people) said the victory against Oman was small. They said the victory against Australia was a fluke. They said the points from the Ireland game were luck. What will they say now that we have beaten Sri Lanka on their own, world-cup hosting soil? Well done!”

The Zimbabwe cricket state: “You (Chevrons) have raised our beautiful flag ever so high! Representing Zimbabwe on the international stage is the highest honour and you are executing it with distinction. Thank you for displaying the very best of Zimbabwean excellence. Keep it up!”

One supporter wrote, “Unbelievable heart and fight! Chevrons are writing history! while another added, “Zimbabwe cricket is rising — proud of the boys!” Overall sentiment reflected excitement, pride and optimism for the next stage.

Zimbabwe’s emphatic win carries deep significance for cricket in southern Africa and the entire African continent.

Their unbeaten performance against established teams like Sri Lanka (and earlier while qualifying for the Super 8s) demonstrates that emerging nations can challenge traditional powerhouses on the world stage, inspiring fans and players across Africa.

This kind of success can drive greater investment, increased participation, and wider recognition for African teams in global cricket.

By topping Group B unbeaten, Zimbabwe now moves into the Super 8s — the next phase of the World Cup where the top eight teams compete in two groups before the knockout rounds.

Their Super 8 campaign begins as scheduled next week. According to fixtures, Zimbabwe will face the West Indies national cricket team on Monday in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, South Africa national cricket team continues its own strong tournament performance, having just completed a perfect group stage with a comfortable win over the UAE and advancing to the Super 8s unbeaten as well.

Their next matches are set against top Super 8 competitors including India and West Indies later this month.

Zimbabwe’s remarkable run has captivated cricket fans worldwide, showcasing the Chevrons’ rise and Africa’s growing influence in international cricket.
