JOHANNESBURG,(CAJ News) – BELLARMINE Mugabe, the son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Gabriel Mugabe, was arrested on Thursday (today) following a shooting incident at his residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.
According to South African Police Service (SAPS), officers responded to reports of gunfire at an upmarket property in the Hyde Park suburb shortly after midday.
Preliminary investigations indicate that an altercation broke out at the residence, allegedly triggered by a dispute between Bellarmine. and individuals visiting the property.
During the confrontation, shots were fired, leaving one person injured.
Police confirmed that the injured individual sustained non-life-threatening wounds and was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. No fatalities were reported.
Bellarmine, along with at least one other suspect present at the scene, was taken into custody and transported to the Sandton Police Station for questioning.
Authorities said a firearm believed to have been used in the incident was seized, and ballistic tests will be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation.
Law enforcement officials have indicated that Mugabe Jr. could face serious charges, potentially including attempted murder, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in circumstances that endanger public safety.
Under South African law, a conviction for attempted murder can result in lengthy imprisonment, depending on the severity of the injuries and the intent established in court.
Firearms-related offences also carry significant penalties, including prison terms and the revocation of firearm licences.
Mugabe Jr. has previously drawn media attention for incidents involving firearms and alleged violent conduct.
In past years, reports linked him to disputes involving security personnel and acquaintances, as well as public displays of firearms on social media platforms.
While not all allegations resulted in formal convictions, critics have long raised concerns about his access to weapons and apparent disregard for public safety norms.
The Hyde Park shooting has reignited debate over accountability and the responsibilities of high-profile individuals residing in South Africa.
As the son of Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for nearly four decades until his removal from office in 2017, Mugabe Jr. has often been in the public eye.
Police said investigations are continuing and that Mugabe Jr. is expected to appear in court once formal charges are finalised.
Authorities have urged members of the public to refrain from speculation while the legal process unfolds.
