LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – ZAMBIA has joined China in celebrating the 98th anniversary of the latter’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

President Hakainde Hichilema praised the PLA’s legacy of courage and sacrifice, describing it as one of the world’s most respected militaries.

Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma delivered the president’s message at a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Lusaka late Wednesday.

“This celebration is not only a tribute to the courageous men and women of the PLA but also a recognition of the strong and enduring friendship between China and Zambia,” Hichilema is quoted.

The commemoration also highlighted decades of defence cooperation between the two countries, including joint training, peacekeeping preparations, equipment support and military exchange programmes.

Hichilema acknowledged the impact of Chinese military training on Zambian officers, especially through scholarships at top military institutions in China.

“These platforms have enhanced the operational readiness of our defence forces and strengthened professional and people-to-people ties,” he said.

Zambia praised China’s prominent role in global peace and security, citing its contributions to United Nations peacekeeping missions, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Development Initiative.

Hichilema also called on China to support Africa’s ongoing push to reform the United Nations Security Council to reflect the current global realities.

The evening concluded with a ceremonial toast to the continued good health of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the success of Ambassador Han Jing, the prosperity of the Chinese people, the enduring Zambia–China friendship and global peace.

PLA was established on August 1 in 1927.
