CAIRO, (CAJ News) – IQRAAM Rayners had three attempts ending in the Usan HD net in this dramatic FIFA Club World Cup encounter at the Inter&Co Stadium in downtown Orlando, Florida, United States.

Yet, his South African side, Mamelodi Sundowns, eventually emerged 1-0 winners over the South Korean opponents, two attempts denied for handball and offside respectively.

But there was no denying Downs the first victory by an African side in this expanded tournament ongoing in the politically divided United States.

Prior, there was an hour-long delay to proceedings owing to the threat of lightning, in the host country that is agitating for war in the Middle East.

Rayners’ effort in the 36th minute, following an assist by Brazilian Lucas Ribeiro, settled this lukewarm encounter played in front of arguably the smallest crowd since the start of the tournament.

Inter&Co Stadium has a capacity of 25 000 but so low was the attendance such that each barking instruction by the technical teams could be heard from the media suites.

By the win, Sundowns top Group F after Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense, who drew 0-0.

This is a reprieve for the South African champions after their recent loss in the final of the African Champions League to Egyptians, Pyramids.

Earlier in the round, another Egyptian outfit, Al Ahly played to a goalless draw with Inter Miami (United States) and Tunisia’s Esperance lost 2-0 to Flamengo (Brazil).

The other of four African representatives, Wydad Casablanca, from Morocco, opened their campaign against Manchester City, in a game they were the underdogs against the English side.
