LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – THE Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) has partnered Sweden’s development finance institution (Swedfund) to enhance digitalisation of the utility’s systems and operations as well as renewable energy integration.
They have signed two agreements under the ZESCO, SwedFund Project Accelerator, aimed at solidifying a longstanding partnership in Zambia’s electricity sector.
A key focus area is the upgrade of the National Control Centre, the backbone of Zambia’s power transmission grid.
“With this digital transformation, the ZESCO National Control Centre upgrade will harness cutting-edge technologies like AI, IoT, and real-time data analytics to optimize grid operations, enabling engineers to predict and resolve issues proactively, ensuring a seamless experience for end-users,” said Eng. Justin Loongo, ZESCO Managing Director.
He was speaking late Tuesday as the two parties sealed the agreement.
AI is artificial intelligence and IoT is the internet of things.
In a related development, ZESCO this week engaged various stakeholders through a familiarisation tour of Kariba North Bank power station for a first-hand appreciation of the prevailing electricity generation and supply status.
“Through transparent dialogue, we highlighted strategic investments, operational milestones, and our commitment to delivering reliable, sustainable energy solutions for Zambia’s growing needs,” Loongo said.
“The session underscored ZESCO’s dedication to innovation, grid resilience, and community partnership, while addressing challenges and opportunities in the energy sector.”
Zambia is struggling to ensure power supplies, amid the receding water levels in the Kariba, the world’s largest artificial water source, which it shares with its southern neighbour Zimbabwe.
