ABUJA, (CAJ News) -THE Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has over the past year generated ₦167 billion (US$104,8) million in revenue embracing modern technology.
Revenues have been generated through the indigenous B’Odogwu automation system over the past year.
Members of the House of Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise have commended the NCS for the revenue performance since deployment of the new technology last year.
Tenny Daniyan, Customs Comptroller of Revenues, said B’Odogwu’s influence, acceptance, usage and flawlessness had shown that the agency could boost revenue collection.
“As of today, we have realised up to ₦167 billion. That means it’s our own structure that has brought this success,” he added.
Daniyan said the advantages of B’Odogwu were numerous and stakeholders had tested and were now using it.
“Because initially, they thought it wasn’t going to work, they said it was a herculean task, but we convinced them and our product (innovation) shows for itself because at the end of the day, it’s the revenue we collect that matters,” Daniyan said.
Revenues mentioned above are part of the ₦365 billion ($229 million) NCS generated in 2024.
Nigeria is West Africa’s largest economy but last year slipped from the biggest economy in the continent to fourth behind South Africa, Egypt and Algeria relipped from the biggest economy in the continent to fourth.
