BANGUI, (CAJ News) – INSURGENCY in the Central African Republic (CAR) has claimed the life of a United Nations (UN) peacekeeper.

The Kenyan peacekeeper was killed near the village of Tabane, 24 km northwest of Zemio, in the Haut-Mbomou prefecture.

Unidentified armed elements launched the deadly attack over the weekend.

Valentine Rugwabiza, representative of the Secretary-General for the CAR and Head of United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), condemned the ambush.

“The Special Representative is extremely shocked by this heinous attack on peacekeepers whose mission is to protect civilians,” said her spokesperson.

She extends her deepest condolences to the Government and people of Kenya and expresses her full sympathy to the victim’s family,” the aide of the envoy added.

Rugwabiza recalled that attacks targeting UN peacekeepers might constitute war crimes under international law.

“She calls on the Central African authorities to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of this attack so that they can be brought to justice swiftly,” her spokesperson said.
