NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYA has passed the halfway mark of its ambitious project to lay 100 000 kilometres of optic fibre countrywide.

This layout is part of the Digital Superhighway project by the government to enhance the country’s information and communications infrastructure and subsequently transform into a digital economy.

“We want to get the entire country on fibre. We are at 56 percent right now,” William Kabogo, Cabinet Secretary: Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, updated.

He was speaking as he presided over the just-launched Countrywide Digital Innovation Network (CDIN) platform, which aims to promote collaborations between the government and the private sector in realising the Digital Superhighway programme.

The Kenya School of Government, which hosted the event, is among stakeholders urged to collaborate.

It is a public service institution established to build the capacity of the public service.

By the figures provided by Kabogo, around 56 000km of fibre has been laid under the government of President William Ruto, which made this a priority when it gained power in late 2022.

With the fibre rollout, the government also aims to connect all government facilities, including 18 offices, to the internet.

“We will make the Kenyan government digital in these two years,” Kabogo assured.
