MEXICO CITY, (CAJ News) — SOUTH Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, have arrived in Mexico to complete their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off on 11 June with a mouth-watering opening clash against co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
The squad touched down in high spirits despite a brief delay to their departure caused by visa-related administrative issues with the United States.
Under the guidance of Belgian coach Hugo Broos, confidence within the South African camp remains high.
Players and technical staff are focused on adapting to local conditions, sharpening tactical preparations and building momentum ahead of what will be the country’s first World Cup appearance since 2010.
The team is also expected to play a warm-up match against Jamaica before the tournament opener.
Bafana’s morale has been boosted by a successful qualification campaign and growing belief that this generation possesses the quality to compete on the world’s biggest stage.
The squad combines experienced campaigners with exciting emerging talent capable of troubling any opponent.
A probable South African starting line-up could feature captain Ronwen Williams in goal, protected by defenders Khuliso Mudau, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Siyabonga Ngezana and Aubrey Modiba.
In midfield, Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas and Jayden Adams could provide creativity and control, while the attacking upfront may consist Oswin Appollis, Relebohile Mofokeng, Themba Zwane and Iqraam Rayners respectively.
Much of South Africa’s hopes will rest on Rayners’s finishing ability, Zwane’s experience and creativity, Mokoena’s midfield leadership and Williams’ proven shot-stopping qualities.
Their performances could prove decisive if Bafana are to progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.
Mexico, however, possess several dangerous players capable of causing problems.
Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez remains a potent attacking threat, while captain Edson Álvarez provides leadership and steel in midfield.
Experienced goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and defender César Montes also bring valuable tournament experience.
With preparations entering their final phase, South Africans will be hoping Bafana Bafana can channel the spirit, discipline and belief required to make a memorable start to their World Cup journey.
