PORT LOUIS, (CAJ News) – MAURITIUS has taken a major step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in the country’s internet landscape.

This follows the introduction of the KaliteNet platform, a partnership between the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation and the French company nPerf.

The free application allows users to test the quality of their broadband internet connection anywhere in the country. KaliteNet was unveiled at a workshop organised by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) on Monday.

The quality-of-service (QoS) tool enables consumers to test their broadband internet connection, which can provide grounds for lodging complaints with their service provider.

ICTA will also benefit, as it will be able to identify areas with consistently poor service and ensure that telecommunications providers fulfil their performance obligations.

Overall, KaliteNet is expected to improve user experience.

Avinash Ramtohul, Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, presided over the launch in Ebène under the theme: “Measuring What Matters: Empowering Internet Users with Crowdsourced Quality of Service.”

He said the initiative was a milestone in Mauritius’ digital transformation journey.

The minister praised the introduction of a new user-centred approach to internet quality assessment.

“Empowering consumers through real-time crowdsourced data will help strengthen transparency, accountability and value for money in the ICT sector,” Ramtohul said.

The platform is the latest in a series of measures implemented by the government to grow the sector.

It complements data protection measures, modernisation of electronic transactions and mobile number portability.

In Mauritius, consumer complaints regarding internet quality include high latency, slow speeds during peak hours and disruptions caused by submarine cable issues.

Headquartered in Lyon, nPerf specialises in internet performance measurement tools.

KaliteNet is available via the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery.
