LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – ZAMBIA’S ruling party has denounced the proliferation of attacks against journalists by its members ahead of elections.
Media personnel covering United Party for National Development (UPND) events in recent days have come under attack as the party seeks another term when elections are held in August.
Supporters, otherwise known as cadres, have run amok.
This past weekend, Alfonso Kasongo, a broadcaster, was brutally assaulted in Lusaka’s Linda Compound while filming a UPND event.
Despite identifying himself as a journalist, cadres allegedly used fists and taser-like weapons to beat him.
Kasongo required hospitalisation.
Recently, UPND cadres disrupted and attacked journalists at a radio station, allegedly in the presence of police officers.
Journalist Lovemore Phiri was also attacked while live on air during a breakfast show.
Cadres forced their way into the studio, damaged equipment and forced the station off air.
UPND has cautioned its members and cadres against attacking, harassing or intimidating journalists and media institutions.
“The party reiterates the clear and consistent position of His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema that no one is above the law,” Mark Simuuwe, party spokesman, said.
“Any individual who engages in criminal conduct does so at their own risk and will be held personally accountable in accordance with the laws of the Republic,” he added.
The ruling party further called upon the Zambia Police Service to investigate all reported incidents involving attacks on journalists and ensure culprits are arrested and prosecuted.
“Journalists, like all citizens, are entitled to their fundamental rights and freedoms as enshrined in the Constitution,” Simuuwe said.
Polls in the Southern African country are scheduled for August 13.
