LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – ZAMBIA has intensified operations at its borders following allegations of corruption and facilitation payments, particularly at the borders with Zimbabwe.

The incidents are reportedly rife at the Chirundu and Livingstone (Victoria Falls) posts.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) noted a video circulating on social media in which a frequent cross-border traveller alleges the solicitation and payment of bribes and facilitation fees.

“The commission treats these allegations with the gravity they deserve,” the ACC stated.

“Corruption at ports of entry damages Zambia’s standing as a reliable destination for trade, investment and tourism.”

The commission noted that corruption increased the cost of doing business, delayed legitimate travellers and transporters, and undermined public trust.

“Border officials are the country’s first ambassadors. The impression they leave is the impression many visitors and traders carry of Zambia,” the ACC stated further.

It noted that, in line with the National Policy on Anti-Corruption and the government’s stance of zero tolerance on corruption in all its forms, the commission reaffirmed that the solicitation, offering, giving or receiving of a bribe or other gratification was a criminal offence under the Anti-Corruption Act.

“The public are reminded that facilitation payments, whether paid in cash or in kind, are bribes and anyone found wanting will be held accountable.”

The ACC has taken measures forthwith, including intensifying joint operations with other relevant law-enforcement agencies at ports of entry.

It is encouraging members of the public to report incidents of corruption and related malpractice to law-enforcement agencies, including through anonymous channels.

Public officers are warned to desist from corrupt practices.

“Anyone found to have solicited, accepted, offered or paid a bribe or facilitation fee will face the full measure of the law,” the commission warned.

Zambia shares borders with Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
