JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE Betway Premiership returns with eight nationwide fixtures across Tuesday and Wednesday, with the early-season table already offering a glimpse of a fiercely competitive campaign.
Four clubs — Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu FC — share the summit on seven points after three matches, while Sekhukhune United and Milford FC occupy fifth and sixth respectively on six points.
Stellenbosch FC and Polokwane City complete the top eight on four points each.
At the other end, Marumo Gallants sit 16th on one point, level with 15th-placed Siwelele.
Kruger United are 14th with one point, while Chippa United, Durban City, Richards Bay and TS Galaxy are also struggling for early momentum.
Tuesday’s headline clash is at Orlando Amstel Arena, where champions Orlando Pirates host Sekhukhune United.
Pirates arrive as favourites after their emphatic 3-0 victory over Chippa United, while Sekhukhune have won two of their opening three matches.
The Buccaneers are unbeaten in three league games and have home advantage, although Sekhukhune’s defensive organisation makes this a potentially tight contest.
Relebohile Mofokeng’s departure has left a creative void, but Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi have already shown attacking promise.
Sekhukhune will look to Bright Ndlovu, who has started the season among their key attacking threats.
At Royal Bafokeng Stadium, struggling Marumo Gallants face TS Galaxy.
Gallants have lost two and drawn one, while Galaxy have two points and remain without a win.
Galaxy’s greater stability gives them the advantage, although Gallants’ need for points could make this a battle.
Kruger United entertain Durban City at Mbombela Stadium.
Both sides have only one winless start behind them, but Kruger’s defensive vulnerabilities and Durban City’s recent 1-1 draw with Richards Bay suggest another tight encounter.
Siwelele host Chippa United in Bloemfontein, with both clubs desperate for a first victory.
Chippa’s 3-0 defeat by Pirates exposed attacking limitations, but they have enough experience to respond.
Wednesday brings arguably the biggest fixture: Mamelodi Sundowns versus AmaZulu at Loftus Versfeld.
Sundowns, the reigning CAF Champions League holders, have won two of three and recently beat Gallants 2-0.
AmaZulu are also unbeaten and boast three-goal scorer Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya.
Sundowns possess greater depth and home advantage, making them favourites. Cassius Mailula and Sphelele Mkhulise are among the players capable of deciding it.
Golden Arrows face Stellenbosch, whose young forward Quwan Plaatjies has already scored three goals.
Stellenbosch’s stronger start and Gavin Hunt’s experience give them an edge, but Arrows’ resilience could produce a draw.
Polokwane City meet in-form newcomers Milford FC, who have won two matches. Milford’s momentum makes them dangerous, but Polokwane’s home advantage could count.
Richards Bay versus Kaizer Chiefs should be another fascinating contest.
Chiefs remain unbeaten and have prolific youngster Wandile Duba among the early scorers. Their confidence gives them the advantage, although Richards Bay will relish home support.
The coaching contest is equally intriguing. Orlando Pirates’ Abdeslam Ouaddou and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Miguel Cardoso have already established winning habits, while Arthur Zwane’s AmaZulu have also started strongly.
Conversely, Phuti Mohafe faces immediate pressure at Gallants after three winless games.
The Premiership’s competitiveness is underlined by South Africa’s continental strength: the country ranked third among African leagues in a June 2026 club-competition ranking, while Sundowns’ Champions League triumph and Pirates’ title demonstrate the quality at the top.
