NAIROBI, (CAJ News) — THE outbreak of violence in Kenyan football does not bode well for a country that is to host the historic edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in less than a year.
The ugly face of the beautiful game reared its head again this past weekend at the Nyayo National Stadium following Tusker’s 3-1 victory over Gor Mahia in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Super Cup.
Horrible scenes followed the outcome of the match amid violence, disorder and property vandalism.
Police deployed tear gas to disperse rioting fans.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) condemned the aftermath.
“There is no place for violence, destruction of property, intimidation or any conduct that puts the safety of players, journalists, officials, fans, security personnel and the public at risk,” it stated.
FKF is concerned by the use of tear gas and other crowd-control measures during the incidents.
“While security agencies have a responsibility to maintain order, such measures must be exercised with restraint, professionalism and in accordance with the law.”
The football federation assured it would work with the relevant authorities and football stakeholders to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and pursue those found responsible for acts of violence or misconduct.
“Any individual found to have breached FKF regulations or the law, whether a fan, club official, steward or security officer, should face appropriate action in accordance with due process.”
Violence is rife in local football.
Earlier this year, in Eldoret, some supporters physically assaulted a referee following a contentious decision.

In 2010, seven people died at Nyayo Stadium during a stampede at a match featuring Gor Mahia and Leopards.
Kenya, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, will host the 2027 AFCON.
It is the first such tournament to be hosted by three countries and the first in five decades to be organised in East Africa.
