US - Iran tread war

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE South African Communist Party (SACP) has strongly condemned the renewed military campaign by the United States and Israel against Iran, describing the offensive as a violation of international law and warning that it has further destabilised the Middle East.

According to the party, the resumption of hostilities has caused widespread destruction in Iran, undermined efforts towards peace, and effectively ended the 82-day ceasefire that had been brokered on 8 April.

“The continued US-Israel war against Iran has caused massive devastation to the people of Iran and has undermined the ceasefire. This is a violation of international law,” said SACP Communications & Acting Media Liaison Officer, Pius Vilakati.

Vilakati said that following a brief lull in fighting, the United States had resumed military operations against Iran, escalating the conflict and casting serious doubt over the prospects for renewed negotiations.

“The 82-day ceasefire brokered on 8 April has been abruptly terminated by the US. Seven consecutive days of bombing by the US and Israel have placed the possibility of negotiations in serious doubt. These developments underscore what we believe is the US’ enduring commitment to war against Iran and the worsening military confrontation in both Iran and the broader Middle East,” he said.

The SACP further accused the United States and its allies of pursuing military objectives that extend beyond strategic targets, insisting that attacks on civilian infrastructure demonstrate a broader intent against the Iranian people.

“Despite public declarations of peace and progress, the actions of the US military and its allies demonstrate little inclination to end their efforts to annihilate Iran as a nation and its people. The bombing of non-military targets lays bare what we regard as the evil intentions of the US government and the genocidal seeds of its operations against Iran,” Vilakati said.

He added that simultaneous military operations by the United States and Israel in Lebanon reinforced the party’s position that the two countries were acting with a shared agenda.

“The concurrent actions of the US and Israel against Lebanon reveal further evidence of what we consider to be a common genocidal intent. Attacks on desalination plants and hospitals carry the obvious hallmarks of war crimes,” Vilakati said.

Reaffirming the party’s longstanding position, Vilakati said the SACP continued to reject what it described as an imperialist war against Iran.

“The SACP continues to condemn this war against Iran. We regard it as an immoral and unjustified conflict and as a desperate attempt by a superpower seeking to distract from its growing illegitimacy,” he said.

Vilakati said the party was calling for greater unity among anti-imperialist movements internationally and reiterated its solidarity with Iran.

“We call for continued unity of all anti-imperialist forces and reaffirm our solidarity with Iran,” he said.
