JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE fairytale run by Cape Verde is showing no sign of relenting as the debutants continue smashing records at the football World Cup.
A 2-2 draw against Uruguay at the Miami Stadium in the late hours of Sunday, West African island nation time, might not rank among the biggest shocks in football World Cup history, but the Blue Sharks are holding their own among the big fish.
It was a contest between footballing royalty and the newcomers.
A well-struck 21st-minute free-kick by Kevin Pina against the inaugural and two-time winners was Cape Verde’s first-ever goal at a World Cup.
Maxi Araújo equalised with a header from very close range into the centre of the goal in the 44th minute.
Agustín Canobbio gave Uruguay a half-time lead.
Hélio Varela’s right-footed shot, again from outside the box, drew Cape Verde level.
The underdogs had already stunned tournament favourites Spain with an unlikely 0-0 draw in their opening match.
Uruguay were already under intense pressure after previously dropping points in a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia.
Cape Verde are joint second with Uruguay behind Spain in Group H, above Saudi Arabia.
The Cape Verde fairytale is set to continue in Texas on Friday against Saudi Arabia, who were beaten 4-0 by Spain in the earlier match.
