NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – A KENYAN governor has expressed concern over child abduction cases in the East African country.
Wandeti Vinya Oduwele, Governor of Machakos County, is concerned.
She cited data from the Child Protection Information Management System (ICPIMS), which indicated that between January 2025 and March 2026, more than 10 500 cases were reported.
These include 1 952 abductions, at least 1 636 missing children cases and other incidents linked to trafficking.
“This trend calls for urgent and coordinated action,” Oduwele said.
“Let the government, through relevant agencies, exercise due diligence in investigating these cases, identify those responsible and ensure they face the full force of the law.”
The governor said that, at the same time, parents, guardians, caregivers and schools must remain vigilant and take greater responsibility for protecting children.
“Strengthening care, supervision and safeguarding measures is essential to ensure every child’s safety and well-being,” Oduwele added.
Child protection in Kenya is primarily governed by the Constitution and the Children Act, which safeguard minors (anyone under 18) from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
