LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – ZAMBIA has expressed displeasure over comments attributed to the outgoing United States ambassador.
Michael Gonzales is the departing envoy.
Mulambo Haimbe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, criticised Gonzales at a press briefing.
The minister condemned remarks made by the outgoing ambassador, describing them as a breach of diplomatic conduct and a misrepresentation of Zambia’s position.
“The ambassador’s comments violated the spirit of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, particularly provisions that require diplomats to respect the laws of the host country and avoid interfering in internal affairs,” Haimbe said.
He expressed concern that the issues raised by the outgoing envoy were not formally communicated through diplomatic channels, calling it a sign of disregard for established procedures.
Haimbe said Zambia’s relationship with the US was not based on aid, but on mutual respect, shared values, and strategic cooperation dating back to 1964.
He stressed that the partnership with America had always been built on equality between the two nations.
The minister dismissed claims that the Southern African country had been unresponsive.
“The ambassador was granted several high-level meetings, including with the President,” the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) stated.
Elections are set for August.
