Death toll in Angola floods rises to 45

LUANDA, (CAJ News) – THE death toll from the floods and landslides in Angola has increased to 45.

Heavy rainfall has hit the Southern African country since the first week of April, causing extensive damage.

The capital, Luanda, and the coastal city of Benguela have been the most affected.

Some 26 deaths have been confirmed in Benguela, 13 in Luanda, four in Cuanza Sul and two in Malanje.

In Luanda, five people remain missing and one person has been injured.

In Benguela, four people are missing and 15 have been injured.

The floods have destroyed 607 homes and submerged 9 511, affecting a total of 51 275 people.

Damage to infrastructure and roads has also been reported.

Because of the heavy rains, the Provincial Government of Benguela has postponed the return to school.

Further moderate to isolated heavy rainfall is forecast across Angola over the coming days.
