LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – THE Zambian government has lurched into fresh accusations of entrenching dictatorship.

This comes after a recently elected leader of the main opposition was briefly detained at the main airport and stopped from travelling outside the country.

On Saturday, authorities at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport briefly detained and blocked Makebi Zulu, elected last week as leader of the Patriotic Front (PF), alongside former Mines Minister Richard Musukwa.

It is believed Zulu was travelling to South Africa where the family of the late former president Edgar Lungu is staying while awaiting a final ruling on his burial.

Zulu is the lawyer for the Lungu family and represented the late leader in previous legal matters.

“The fact that we have heeded the people’s call… is by no means an indication that we have forfeited our rights,” Zulu said.

Historian Sishuwa Sishuwa warned, “Zambia is on a dangerous path.”
