LILONGWE, (CAJ) News) – THE death toll from floods affecting Malawi has risen to 22.
The impoverished Southern African country requires US$10 million to assist affected communities.
Malawi was hit by heavy rains throughout last week.
This has affected 31 035 households (approximately 139 662 people) in 18 councils. At least 1 164 people have been displaced and are sheltered in 31 camps.
Wilson Moleni, Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, is visiting communities affected by heavy rains and floods in Mulanje and Phalombe.
“Unfortunately, we have lost 22 people, whilst 84 have sustained injuries,” he said.
“We are providing relief assistance to affected communities. We require $10 million to restore basic services, prevent secondary disaster impacts and initiate early recovery interventions.”
The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) this past weekend donated K300 million ($172 739) towards the 2025/26 Lean Season and Emergency Response Programmes.
Justin Saidi, Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, described the donation as a timely and generous gesture.
“This comes at a time when we are providing relief assistance to households affected by food insecurity and recent floods,” he said.
