JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – FORMER CAJ News Africa journalist Jonisayi Maromo has died in the eastern border city of Mutare, Manicaland, Zimbabwe after a short illness.
Maromo, a respected Pan-African journalist with nearly two decades of newsroom experience, built an admirable career covering politics, governance, international relations, crime and investigative stories across the continent.
His death marks a profound loss to the journalism fraternity in Southern Africa and beyond.
The former CAJ News Africa journalist worked in Johannesburg, South Africa, between 2008 and 2009, where he quickly established himself as a dedicated and versatile reporter.
Colleagues remember him as a consummate professional who approached every assignment with passion, curiosity and a deep commitment to ethical journalism.
Following his tenure at CAJ News Africa, Maromo went on to work for the South African Press Association (SAPA) and later the African News Agency (ANA), where he further cemented his reputation as a fearless and highly dependable reporter.
Over the years, he covered a wide spectrum of news beats including general news, politics, features, sport, technology, business, travel and tourism, entertainment, and investigative reporting.
His ability to adapt to different news environments and consistently deliver compelling stories earned him widespread respect among editors, colleagues and sources alike.
Maromo was admired not only for his professional excellence, but also for his warm personality, sense of humour and willingness to mentor younger journalists entering the profession.
CAJ News Africa founder and CEO Savious-Parker Kwinika said he received news of Maromo’s passing with profound shock and sadness.
“We have truly lost a great Pan-African journalist who covered this continent with passion, distinction, love and pride,” Kwinika said.
“Jonisayi was a highly ethical, versatile and dependable journalist who always upheld the highest standards of our profession. His contribution to journalism will never be forgotten.”
Former colleague at CAJ News Africa, Mthulisi Sibanda also paid tribute to Maromo, describing him as both a brother and a consummate professional.
“I am deeply saddened by the news. Rest in eternal peace my dear brother. You ran your race very well,” Sibanda said.
“You will always be remembered for your unwavering love, humour, warm smile and the highest level of professionalism in the journalism industry.”
Former colleagues say his legacy will live on through the many journalists he inspired and the impactful stories he produced over the years.
