LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – THE ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) reports it has received more than 200 former members of the opposition to its ranks.

These individuals, including leaders, are said to have defected from the main opposition Patriotic Front (PF) and the Socialist Party (SP).

UPND disclosed it had received over 200 defectors led by Festus Ndlovu, the former PF Mukaika Constituency Vice Youth Chairman in Katete, Eastern province.

Gilbert Liswaniso, UPND National Youth Chairman, received them.

He welcomed the party’s growth in the province.

“The development reflects the good governance demonstrated by President Hakainde Hichilema and his progressive policies, which are visibly improving people’s households,” Liswaniso said.

Kapelwa Mbangweta, Minister of Western Province and UPND provincial chairman, has welcomed some 67 former members of various opposition political parties, including ex-SP chairlady, Lydia Pelekelo.

Pelekelo is quoted as highlighting the government’s dedication to improving citizens’ welfare through social protection measures, particularly the free education policy accompanied by a School Feeding programme.

Mbangweta meanwhile said in recent weeks, they had observed a surge of parties coming to the Western province, spreading misinformation and making promises of development.

The official said these pledges had not been fulfilled when these parties were in power.

“Hence, I urge all of you to vote for President Hichilema on August 13, 2026, to ensure continued unprecedented development and various social protection initiatives, including free education,” Mbangweta told supporters.

Former PF Copperbelt provincial chairman, and former Defence Permanent Secretary in the PF government, Stady Mwale, has also joined UPND, the ruling party said.

Elias Mubanga, recently dismissed as Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises Development, has pledged his loyalty and support for Hichilema.

“As we move towards August, I wish to reaffirm my commitment to party mobilisation, particularly in Muchinga province, as we work tirelessly to maximise votes for President Hichilema,” he stated.

The opposition is beset by factionalism ahead of elections.

Hichilema seeks a second term after winning in 2021.
