POLOKWANE, (CAJ News) – ZIMBABWE made history by lifting the inaugural Mukuru Football Cup on Tuesday following a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Zambia in a tightly contested final.
The match was played at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, where fans witnessed a disciplined and determined performance from the Zimbabwean national team.
The tournament featured four national teams—Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, and Botswana—bringing together Southern African rivals in a compact but competitive format.
Despite its small size, the competition delivered high-quality football and intense regional pride, with each team eager to claim the first Mukuru title.
In the final, Zimbabwe and Zambia battled evenly for much of the match, with both sides creating chances but struggling to find a breakthrough.
The decisive moment came in the second half when forward Junior Zindoga rose to the occasion, scoring the only goal of the match.
His clinical finish followed a well-placed cross into the box, catching the Zambian defense off guard and ultimately proving to be the difference.
Zimbabwe’s defence held firm in the closing stages, resisting Zambia’s attempts to equalize.
The Warriors displayed strong organization and composure under pressure, ensuring they maintained their narrow lead until the final whistle.

In the third-place playoff, Malawi secured a win over Botswana to claim the bronze position, rounding out the standings of the inaugural tournament.
The Mukuru Football Cup also offered financial incentives to the top teams. Zimbabwe, as champions, received $50,000 in prize money, while runners-up Zambia earned $30,000.
Third-placed Malawi took home $20,000, and fourth-placed Botswana received $10,000. These rewards highlighted the tournament’s commitment to supporting football development in the region.
Organizers praised the success of the competition, emphasizing its role in strengthening regional ties and providing valuable match experience for participating nations.
