MBABANE, (CAJ News) – ESWATINI has set a plan to establish a mobile payment gateway for the country by 2028.

This is among the main resolutions adopted by the cabinet following a just-concluded retreat in northwestern Ezulwini, where the cabinet reaffirmed collective commitment to advancing national transformation, strengthening governance and delivering tangible impact for the citizens.

Held under the theme, “Transforming Eswatini Through Effective Execution”, the week-long retreat concluded on Monday (yesterday) with a pledge by cabinet to tap technology to enhance services.

On the agenda of energy and digital transformation, establishing a mobile payment gateway will be prioritised alongside attaining energy security by 2030.

“Measures to enhance efficiency in the execution will include establishing or resuscitating task teams/execution teams and ensuring that these subject matters are standing agenda items for cabinet until adequately resolved,” cabinet stated at the retreat’s conclusion.

A mobile payment gateway is a secure technology service that authorises and processes credit card, debit card or digital wallet transactions for mobile apps, websites, and mobile point-of-sale devices.

The cabinet has also resolved to institutionalise digital dashboards and scorecards for real-time monitoring, evaluation and accountability in service delivery.

A cabinet-level performance dashboard will be created to track progress, address bottlenecks, accelerate delivery and ensure accountability through enforceable follow-up actions.

Performance agreements across ministries and agencies are to be tied to clear, measurable outcomes with established indicators and targets.

Prime Minister Russell Dlamini presided over the retreat.

Speaking at a post-retreat briefing, he said the cabinet committed to maintain agility, adapting and responding to changing circumstances the former Swaziland experienced.

“We champion innovation, fostering creative thinking and pioneering solutions to meet the challenges of our time. We strive for excellence, continually raising standards and pursuing superior outcomes for the benefit of all emaSwati,” he said.

Africa’s last absolute monarchy, Eswatini is a country of 1,27 million people.
