West Indies destroy Zimbabwe

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – IN a spectacular display of power batting on Monday, the West Indies crushed Zimbabwe by 152 runs in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight match at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The Caribbean giants posted a colossal 254/6 from 20 overs, before dismissing Zimbabwe for 102 all-out in just 13.3 overs, leaving the African side with no realistic chance of a comeback on the night.

West Indies’ innings was marked by brutal hitting and clinical strokeplay, epitomised by Shimron Hetmyer, who tore into the Zimbabwe bowling attack with a blistering 85 off 34 balls, including seven sixes and as many fours.

His innings set the tone, racing the Caribbean total to astronomical heights and placing enormous pressure on the Zimbabwe bowlers.

Rovman Powell also starred, contributing a fluent 59 off 35 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford added a quickfire 31 not out, ensuring West Indies finished with one of the tournament’s highest-ever T20 totals.

Zimbabwe’s reply never gained traction. The Chevrons, despite early intent, were unable to match the required scoring rate.

Key batters struggled against pace and spin alike, and momentum slipped away as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Compared to the explosive Caribbean innings, the visiting batters were left chasing shadows on a pitch that had flattened out after the power sessions.

For Zimbabwe, the loss is a harsh reality check after their fairytale run through the early stages of the tournament.

The Chevrons had topped their group by defeating top teams such as Australia and Sri Lanka to qualify for the Super Eight unbeaten, an achievement that had captured global attention and sparked hopes of a semi-final berth.

However, this heavy defeat significantly dents those ambitions. With only the top two teams from Super Eight Group 1 progressing to the semifinals, Zimbabwe now faces an uphill battle.

Their net run rate has suffered badly, and with only one victory likely to be achievable from remaining fixtures, they will need unlikely assistance from other results to keep their campaign alive.

Despite the setback, the tournament has afforded a platform for Zimbabwean talents like skipper Sikandar Raza and all-round contributors such as Brian Bennett and Blessing Muzarabani to shine on cricket’s biggest stage — a development that promises brighter days ahead for the nation’s cricketing hopes.
