JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE Betway Premiership served up a dramatic weekend of football as the race for the title and the battle to avoid relegation gathered momentum.

Across Saturday and Sunday, crucial matches influenced the standings, with Orlando Pirates asserting themselves as serious title contenders, while teams at the bottom continued to struggle.

Saturday’s headline fixture saw Orlando Pirates deliver a commanding performance, beating Magesi FC 2–0 at the Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto.

Pirates, who had struggled earlier in 2026, rediscovered their rhythm with goals from Yamela Mbuthuma and Relebohile Mofokeng to claim their first league win of the year and pull level on points with leaders Mamelodi Sundowns — both clubs now sit on 32 points, though Pirates have played one fewer game.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Polokwane City conceded a two-goal lead to draw 2–2 with Orbit College, dropping valuable points in their quest for a top-half finish.

Another entertaining contest saw Richards Bay and Golden Arrows play out a 2–2 stalemate in KwaZulu-Natal. These results highlighted the deeply competitive nature of the mid-table pack.

Sunday’s action was highlighted by Sekhukhune United’s narrow 1–0 victory over TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium, a result that strengthens Sekhukhune’s bid to remain in the top five and distance themselves from the relegation zone.

At the top of the log, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates share the summit on 32 points, with Kaizer Chiefs closely behind on 30 and AmaZulu FC also on 30 but with a game in hand, followed by Sekhukhune United on 29.

This configuration sets up an intriguing title race: Sundowns, perennial favourites and recent domestic stalwarts, have the advantage of consistency and a relatively strong goal difference.

Pirates, however, with momentum and games in hand, look primed to mount a serious challenge if they maintain form.

Chiefs and AmaZulu retain credible hopes, provided they tighten up their defences and convert draws into wins. Sekhukhune, while slightly behind, cannot be discounted should they sustain their recent uptick in results.

In contrast, the relegation picture remains troubling for the league’s strugglers.

At the foot of the table, Magesi FC occupy last place with 11 points from 15 games, struggling to find form and facing a tough fight to avoid automatic demotion.

Orbit College FC (14), Chippa United (15) and Marumo Gallants (15) cluster just above them, but all are dangerously close to the drop zone.

Teams such as Stellenbosch FC, Golden Arrows and Siwelele FC sit in precarious positions and must find consistency if they hope to climb clear of danger.

For the relegation-threatened sides, the challenge is significant: with only a handful of fixtures remaining before the season’s business end, turning draws into wins — particularly against similarly placed opponents — is vital.

While the bottom-placed team will likely face automatic relegation, the club finishing 15th will enter a play-off with a Motsepe Championship side**, offering a final lifeline for survival.

Overall, this weekend underscored both the intensity at the summit and the simmering pressure at the bottom. The title chase is finely poised, and every point now carries heightened significance.

As the season progresses, fans can expect fierce competition across the table — from contenders eyeing glory to underdogs fighting to stay in South African top-flight football.
