POLOKWANE, (CAJ News) – DEFENDING champions Mamelodi Sundowns secured a late and crucial 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, with both goals coming in stoppage time to underline their title credentials in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.

It was Nuno Santos who broke the deadlock in the 91st minute with a composed finish after sustained pressure.

Three minutes later, Bryan Leon doubled the lead, nodding home from close range after the Sekhukhune goalkeeper had initially denied a Peter Shalulile effort.

The result extends Sundowns’ advantage at the summit, restoring a three-point cushion at the top of the league.

Though Orlando Pirates remain close with games in hand, this win reinforces Sundowns’ status as favourites to retain their crown, continuing a period of domestic dominance that has seen them lift multiple PSL titles in recent years.

With the title race tightening as the season progresses, Sundowns sit firmly in pole position, but challengers such as Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are comfortably within striking distance if they maintain consistency in the coming weeks.

Clubs like Stellenbosch FC and perhaps Sekhukhune United themselves could push for continental spots, though their depth may be tested over the final stretch.

At the other end of the table, teams in the drop zone are fighting for survival.

Although relegation candidates can vary as the season unfolds, sides currently in the lower half must accumulate vital points to avoid slipping into the NFD.

Historically, teams with limited squad depth struggle in this phase, and every point becomes priceless.

Aside from the title contenders, clubs such as Stellenbosch FC, AmaZulu, and Durban City are likely to finish within the top 8, securing respectable league positions and potential qualification for domestic cups or continental competitions.

The mid-table battle remains fiercely competitive, with smaller margins often deciding final placements.

Sundowns’ gritty win in Polokwane is more than three points — it’s a psychological edge in a season where every match feels like a final.
