JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – CHINESE new-energy vehicle giant BYD Auto South Africa has taken a significant step forward in the local automotive market after securing a semi-final place in the 2026 South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition.

Two of the brand’s newest offerings — the BYD Shark and the BYD Dolphin Surf — have advanced to the semi-final round, where they will be subjected to intensive scrutiny by an independent panel of Car of the Year jurors.

The evaluation will focus on real-world performance, technological innovation, design, energy efficiency and overall driving experience.

The BYD Shark enters the competition as a bold plug-in hybrid contender, combining rugged capability with electrified performance aimed at drivers seeking adventure without sacrificing efficiency.

In contrast, the fully electric BYD Dolphin Surf targets urban motorists, offering compact dimensions, agile handling and smart digital features designed for city mobility.

The semi-final recognition follows strong market reception for both vehicles since their South African launch, highlighting BYD’s growing influence as the country accelerates towards cleaner mobility solutions.

Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa, said the Car of the Year nod validates the brand’s long-term strategy in the region.

“Being recognised by the Car of the Year jury is an important endorsement of the work we’re doing in South Africa,” Chang said.

“It reflects our focus on bringing globally competitive electric and hybrid technology to the local market, while continuing to invest in innovation, faster charging solutions and partnerships that support long-term EV adoption.”

Beyond product development, BYD is actively working with public and private sector partners, including Eskom and Absa, to help build the infrastructure and financial ecosystems needed to support electric vehicle growth in South Africa.

As the COTY competition progresses towards its final stages, BYD’s semi-final achievement underlines its transition from new entrant to serious contender — not only in motoring circles, but also in shaping South Africa’s electric mobility future.
