GIYANI, (CAJ News) – GIYANI and surrounding villages in Limpopo have been hit hard by severe flooding after relentless heavy rainfall over the past week, leaving homes destroyed and families displaced.
The downpours, part of a broader weather system affecting parts of Limpopo and neighbouring provinces, have caused rivers to overflow and submerged low-lying areas, prompting emergency responses and a national disaster declaration.
In Mbaula village near Giyani, more than 40 families have been forced to abandon their homes after floodwaters inundated their communities.
Many residents, including the elderly and children, are now taking refuge on church floors with only basic belongings, while extensive damage to bridges and roads makes access difficult.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has maintained a Red Level 10 warning in the region, signalling extreme rainfall and continued flood risk.
The intense weather has damaged critical infrastructure, disrupted transport routes, and led to the closure of schools and other public services across Limpopo.
Tragically, the floods have also claimed lives. Across the province, at least 18 people have died, with several others still missing after being swept away by swollen rivers.
Emergency teams continue search and rescue operations in high-risk areas, urging residents to seek higher ground where possible.
Local authorities and disaster response teams are working to provide relief.
However, with many families losing nearly everything in the flooding, community leaders are calling for urgent government assistance to support recovery efforts and help rebuild infrastructure.
The focus now is on safeguarding lives, restoring access to essential services, and planning longer-term support for those whose homes and livelihoods have been devastated.
The ongoing weather patterns and flood threats highlight broader concerns about disaster readiness and climate resilience in vulnerable rural and urban communities across South Africa.
