NEW YORK, (CAJ News) – THIS past weekend delivered exciting action for athletics fans across the United States as elite distance runners and collegiate track teams competed in key events marking the early 2026 season.

The 46th World Athletics Cross Country Championships took place on January 10 in Tallahassee, Florida, drawing competitors from more than 50 countries to Apalachee Regional Park for intense racing over demanding terrain.

In the senior men’s race, Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo clinched the title with a strong performance, while Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich powered to victory in the senior women’s division.

Ethiopia secured both team titles, underscoring its traditional strength in distance running. Australia also shone by winning the mixed relay event.

The championships provided a global stage for distance talent early in the year, with athletes demonstrating depth and competitiveness across continents.

In the senior men’s standings, runners from Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya finished prominently among the leaders, reflecting the continued dominance of East African distance runners in cross-country competition.

On the indoor track side of the sport, collegiate competition kicked off with strong performances.

At the Clemson Invitational in South Carolina, the University of Tennessee athletes set the tone for the indoor season, with sprinters Davonte Howell and Traunard Folson both clocking 6.49 seconds in the men’s 60 meters, a mark that currently leads the world and NCAA rankings this indoor campaign.

Tennessee won multiple events and posted several top 10 marks on the early 2026 lists, showcasing talent across sprints, relays and field events.

Similarly, the Alexis Jarrett Invitational in Missouri saw the University of Missouri claim six event victories, including sprint wins from senior Robert Hines and another title in the women’s pole vault from Anna Vedral.

These meets highlight the depth and competitiveness of U.S. collegiate athletics as the season gains momentum.
