GABORONE, (CAJ News) – THE launch of the Greater Gaborone Traffic Management System is a milestone in the management of urban mobility and enhancing public safety in Botswana.
President Duma Boko on Tuesday launched the system, which is under the aegis of the Botswana Integrated Transport Project.
Gaborone is the economic and political capital of the Southern African country.
The centralised, smart system integrates traffic lights, surveillance cameras, speed enforcement and real-time monitoring into one coordinated control centre.
This enables proactive traffic management, quicker incident response and improved road safety across Greater Gaborone and surrounding settlements.
Officiating at the launch, Boko explained that through data-driven coordination, Botswana was easing congestion, reducing accidents, shortening travel time and enhancing the daily experience of commuters.
“This initiative strengthens public safety, improves productivity and supports a smarter, more efficient urban environment,” the president said.
“As our cities continue to grow, we are embracing intelligent transport solutions that build resilience, improve quality of life and move Botswana confidently into the future.”
Like many capital cities in the continent, Gaborone experiences significant daily traffic congestion, particularly during morning and afternoon rush hours.
This comes with economic and social costs.
The government recently launched a new Centralised Traffic Control (CTCC) system to help manage and ease this issue.
