LUSAKA, (CAJ News) – ZAMBIA Telecommunications Company Limited (ZAMTEL) has upgraded more than 450 sites to 4G and 5G countrywide in 2025 as its tower upgrade exercise gathers pace countrywide.

The company is on course to reach its target of upgrading 600 sites by the end of December this year.

Jason Mwanza, the Chief Executive Officer of Zamtel, provided an update in Lusaka as he hosted a delegation from the Access Bank Group.

The meeting with a delegation led by Dele Sanyaolu, Head of Corporate Banking, explored collaborations in the areas of technology advancement and digital financial services.

“As we continue to roll out our network upgrade, Zamtel will continue to collaborate with strategic partners such as Access Bank with the objective of delivering quality services to our customers countrywide,” Mwanza said.

The site’s upgrade is a major step by the government-owned telecommunication service provider in preparation for the deployment of a commercial 5G service, at a date yet to be confirmed.

Its bigger competitors, Airtel and MTN already offer 5G, after launching in 2023 and 2022 respectively.

The upgrade to 4G is equally necessary as the Zambian government phases out 3G, in line with global telecommunication trends.
