NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – THE launch of the Google Gemini Pro Plan for Kenyan tertiary students is a commitment by government and the private sector to encourage local youths to leverage emerging technologies for enhanced learning.

It promotes innovation and prepares a tech-savvy workforce.

The plan, which entails Google offering a free 12-month trial of the AI Pro plan, including Gemini Pro and Advanced features, is available immediately, following the launch in Nairobi on Wednesday.

Google Gemini is a family of multimodal AI models and a conversational AI assistant that processes text, images, audio, code and video and is hailed as a powerful personal assistant for tasks like writing, research and brainstorming.

A launch ceremony of the Gemini Pro Plan has been launched in Nairobi for Kenyan university and college students.

“This is a landmark initiative that underscores the government, academia and the private sector in advancing our digital transformation agenda,” said Beatrice Inyangala, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Higher Education and Research.

She said the initiative came at a time AI was reshaping every aspect of human endeavour from health, agriculture, education, governance and industry.

“By providing 12 months complimentary access to the Gemini Pro Plan, Google is not only democratising cutting-edge access to AI tools but also empowering our youth to innovate, create and compete on the global stage.”

Inyangala said the ministry was committed to building an education system that nurtures digital skills, creativity and problem-solving abilities.

This initiative complements government efforts towards the Digital Superhighway and the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

“It aligns with our AI Strategy of 2024-2030,” Inyangala said.
