JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) — SOUTH Africans and supporters across the world will unite on Sunday, 7 December 2025, for the Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run (MRWR) — an annual celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy.

The event, jointly hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), commemorates 12 years since Madiba’s passing and renews his call for justice, unity, and equality.

Starting and finishing at the Union Buildings in Tshwane, the MRWR features 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km routes, with races commencing at 6:30 a.m. Participants can register online at http://www.mandelawalkandrun.com, with entry fees ranging from R100 to R200.

Proceeds will support the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s ongoing work in dialogue, social justice, and community development.

This year’s event welcomes Blanche Moila as its official Race Ambassador. A trailblazer in South African athletics, Moila became the first black woman to receive Springbok colours in 1984.

Her distinguished career and advocacy for youth empowerment continue to embody Mandela’s values of perseverance and inclusivity.

Beyond fitness, the 2025 edition amplifies three of Gauteng’s key social campaigns:

Tswa Daar Anti-Substance Abuse Campaign – encouraging youth to “step out” of the grip of drugs and alcohol and embrace healthier lifestyles.

Gender-Based Violence Awareness – reaffirming commitment to Madiba’s vision of safety and equality for all, particularly women and children.

The Spirit of Tswa Daar – inspiring citizens to move beyond complacency and take an active role in strengthening their communities.

“This year holds deep meaning as we mark 12 years since Madiba’s passing,” said Professor Mbongiseni Buthelezi, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

“We gather to honour his vision for dignity, equality, and a better life for all.”

MEC Matome Chiloane added: “The Mandela Walk and Run is more than a race — it’s a heartbeat of social cohesion. The ‘Tswa Daar’ spirit calls each of us to step forward for a healthier, drug-free, and safer Gauteng.”
