JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – SOUTH African football clubs enjoyed a largely successful weekend in continental competitions, as Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch FC, and Mamelodi Sundowns all advanced in their respective CAF tournaments — with Orlando Pirates the only side to bow out in heartbreaking fashion.

Kaizer Chiefs, still riding high under their new technical setup, defeated Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) outfit AS Simba 3–1 in a CAF Confederation Cup clash at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.

The victory ensured Amakhosi’s progression to the next round and provided a welcome morale boost for the Soweto giants, who are rebuilding after several challenging seasons.

Chiefs’ goals came courtesy of Etiosa Ighodaro, Zitha Kwinika, and Makabi Lilepo, while an unfortunate own goal by Aden McCarthy gave the visitors a consolation.

The result underlined Chiefs’ growing confidence on the continental stage, where they aim to replicate their 2021 CAF Champions League final appearance.

In Cape Town, Stellenbosch FC continued their impressive rise in African football with a dominant 4–1 triumph over Equatorial Guinea’s 15 Agosto at the Cape Town Stadium.

The win marked another milestone for the relatively young club, which has become known for its attacking flair and youth development.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns, South Africa’s reigning Premier Soccer League champions, proved once again why they are regarded among Africa’s elite.

The Tshwane-based giants secured a 2–0 home victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, completing a commanding 7–1 aggregate win.

Goals from Nuno Santos and prolific striker Peter Shalulile sealed the result as Masandawana continued their quest for another CAF title following their 2016 triumph.

However, there was heartbreak for Orlando Pirates, who were eliminated from the CAF Champions League despite a gallant effort.

The Buccaneers overturned a first-leg deficit to defeat Saint-Eloi Lupopo of the DRC 3–0 in regulation time at Orlando Stadium, only to lose 5–4 on penalties.

Goals from Masindi Nemtajela, Yanela Mbuthuma, and Oswin Appollis gave Pirates hope, but their continental campaign ended in disappointment.

Overall, the weekend’s results reflected the growing strength and competitiveness of South African clubs on the African stage, with three teams still flying the national flag high in CAF competitions.
