NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – A POLITICAL storm has gripped Kenya after a governor appeared to celebrate the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Governor Mutahi Kahiga of the central county of Nyeri.
He has been quoted as suggesting the death was “work of God” of Mount Kenya political interests. Nyeri is located in that region.
“God came through for us,” he is quoted at a funeral in Kieni on Tuesday.
It comes at a time Kenya is still mourning Odinga, who died in India last week, while seeking treatment.
Among the first to condemn the utterances is Homa Bay Governor, Gladys Wanga.
“The comments are reckless, despicable and unbecoming of a public officer,” Wanga said
“To celebrate his (Odinga’s) death is to mock the very ideals that bind us together as a people.”
William Kabogo, Kenya Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, said Kahiga’s remarks allegedly made by Kahiga were “deeply regrettable and unacceptable.”
“At a moment when our nation needs healing and cohesion, such divisive statements undermine the very fabric of our democracy,” Kabogo said.
He said Odinga stood for the ideals of democracy, justice and national unity.
“To speak in a manner that disrespects his legacy and fuels division among Kenyans is both unfortunate and unbecoming of a leader,” Kabogo added.
Kahiga has apologised to the Odinga family and on Wednesday, announced he was with immediate effect stepping down as the Vice Chair of the Council of Governors.
“Let me make it clear that the remarks I made are my personal views and therefore should in no way be associated with a community’s position or any political affiliation nor the Council of Governors,” he said.
The Council of Governors comprises of the governors of the 47 counties.
