WINDHOEK, (CAJ News) – NAMIBIA has reiterated a call to Western nations that imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe to remove them.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, made the sentiments on Friday as she welcomed President Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana to State House for the Second Session of the Namibia–Botswana Bi-National Commission.

The pair discussed a number of issues, according to The Presidency.

“She (Nandi-Ndaitwah) also reaffirmed Namibia’s call for peace across Africa and the lifting of sanctions on Zimbabwe and Cuba,” read a statement.

Some Western nations slapped sanctions on Zimbabwe in the early 2000s citing human rights violations by the government of then president, Robert Mugabe, now late.

The United Nations (UN) has ruled the sanctions as illegal.

Meanwhile, in her remarks, the host president said the meeting with Boko reflected the strong friendship and shared vision between Namibia and Botswana, built on history, mutual respect, and a commitment to peace, stability and prosperity.

Over the past week, ministers and officials from both countries reviewed progress and identified new areas of cooperation in trade, transport, agriculture, energy, education and security.

Key highlights include progress on the Trans-Kalahari Railway and the One-Stop Border Post, 24-hour border operations using national ID cards.

They also discussed continued collaboration through the Botswana Vaccine Institute to protect livestock and promote food security.

Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the importance of turning strong political ties into tangible economic opportunities that create jobs and empower young people and women.
