LILONGWE, (CAJ News) – THE incoming administration in Malawi has accused its predecessor of corrupt practices through unlawful appointments as the latter’s tenure nears a conclusion.

President-elect, Prof. Peter Mutharika (85), is to be sworn in on Saturday.

Ahead of the event, his Democratic Progressives Party (DPP) said he expressed grave concern over reports of government officials taking advantage of the transitional period to push through questionable contracts and payments, engage in corrupt practices and carry out irregular promotions, recruitment and payments.

“This behaviour not only goes against the principles of patriotism but also violates public trust and breaks the law,” Shadric Namalomba, presidential spokesperson, said.

“His Excellency, Prof.Arthur Peter Mutharika, reiterates his strong warning, previously issued at a press conference held at his Nymbadwe residence in Blantyre, that such actions are unlawful and intolerable.”

According to Namalomba, the incoming president also sent a message to all public servants involved in these illicit activities to cease immediately.

“Those found involved will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Congress PArty of the defeated incumbent, Lazerus Chakwera, confirmed he will be present at the swearing-in ceremony of Mutharika at the weekend.

“Malawi is one, regardless of party or religion,” MCP stated.

“We will remember Chakwera for many things, some of which are his patriotism, loyalty and promoting unity.”

Mutharika has been announced as the winner, with 56, 76 percent of the vote, after elections held on September 16.
