ABUJA, (CAJ News) – THE humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria has condemned the killing of more than 50 civilians by an Islamist group this past weekend.

The tragedy occurred In Darajamal village, Bama local government area of Borno state in the north-east .

An unknown number of people were also allegedly abducted, with others fleeing with injuries.

At least 28 houses were also reportedly burned during the attack.

Humanitarians project the number of casualties to change as more information becomes available.

Mohammed Fall, the United Nations coordinator, denounced the killings.

He called on security authorities to apprehend the perpetrators of this attack and swiftly bring them to justice.

“I also call for the immediate release of all those abducted,” Fall said.

He said the recent killing of civilians was yet another grim reminder of the toll of rising violent attacks and insecurity in Borno this year.

The attacks range from targeted attacks on communities to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, using improvised explosive devices, suicide bombings and other tactics.

Deadly attacks against civilians have also been recorded in neighbouring Adamawa and Yobe states.

Boko Haram and its splinter formations have carried out the attacks since 2009.
